In 9th Century A.D, the Abbasid Empire based in Baghdad (Iraq) had reached its zenith and had great control even over
Iran. However, its energies were spent more in fighting the nomadic Turks of Central Asia (who were pagan). Islamized
Turks defended the Abbasid Empire from the non-Islamized Turks of central Asia.
Iranian rule in Transoxiana and its neighboring areas was being gradually replaced by Turks, including the nomadic Turks
who were called Turkmen. It was these Turks who set the political agenda of the future, fighting both the Turkish tribes
which had not converted, and expanding into India.
When the Abbasid Empire disintegrated, and a series of aggressive, expansionist states arose. These states were
independent in name, but they accepted the nominal suzreignty of the Caliph who legitimized their position by granting
them a formal letter or manshur. In course of time, the rulers of these states began to be called Sultans. Most of these
sultans were Turks. Among these were the sultans of Ghazni and Ghor.............
